Strongly considering selling my MINI and picking up something that’s going to be a little less troublesome when something goes wrong. Saw this Acura CL Type S on the List of Craig and was interested. It has a lot of miles but effectively one owner and looks to be well taken care of. !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! Thanks for any and all advice/input!

Good car. My dad used to have one of those. The engine is very potent and loves to rev.
But the transmission is probably already on its last legs. I wouldn’t touch a 3.2 with a 15ft pole.

A guy at my high school had one with a big banner across the windshield which said “DOCH V-TEK”. He wasn’t the brightest.

If you can somehow find one with a manual, get it. The automatics are made of glass, though.

Oh come on, you don’t want double over-cam heads? Not even a Maybach has those!

Surprisingly, the car in the ad is a manual.

Even a manual?

It is a manual and looks like a well cared for car. Having a semi-nice car to cruise in while still being somewhat fun is very appealing to me. Plus Honda reliability.

Ah yeah, didn’t notice there was actually an ad when I made that comment. I haven’t heard anything bad about the manual gearboxes other than their extreme rarity. They may even have an LSD. At that price it’s a great deal, too.

Can attest to the glass trans. issue. Had a 2000 tl, went through 3 of them....

It’s a Prelude.

I did read that in 2003 some got an LSD which would be awesome. Hopefully I’ll be able to go take a look at it sometime this week.

Honda seems to have forgotten how to build an automatic transmission sometime around 1996. Several cars introduced after that had problems like that. Most of them were V6s, but the 5th gen Prelude had the same issues, and from what’s I understand the 2nd gen CR-V also did. I still won’t touch an automatic Honda to this day.

Really? I thought it was an Accord.

Back when I had Facebook, a guy in a Prelude group I was in had swapped a drivetrain from one of these into a 5th gen. Last I heard (and this is going on 3 years now), he was dissatisfied with the handling (imagine that, adding more weight to the front of a FWD car adversely affects handling) and was working on mating the J32 to an S2000 transmission. Not sure what came of that.

Well I mean more in the goal of its design. Idk about the origin of its chassis.

198K!?
That engine has barely been broken in!
(Former ‘02 TL Type-S owner 5AT w/ 215K on odo — mfg recall took care of the tranny)

hell of a deal. If it sells and you cant find another MT one just get a lexus sc300 or sc400. RWD and similar type of vehicle otherwise

DO IT
BUY IT NOW
a manual CL-S is a very hard find. The J32 is a good engine, just make sure it has had at least one timing belt/water pump service and has always had good/regular oil changes.

came here to say this

According to the ad it just had a second timing belt done and has been maintained well with records.

Those Lexuses (is that even a word?) are impossible to find in decent shape for a reasonable price though.

Haha, hopefully I’ll get to look at it this weekend and offload my Mini but until the latter my hands are tied.
